our story
The Assyrian community of Houston, while thriving today, has modest origins and an inspiring story of development. We started out as a small group of Assyrian patriots who would hold informal gatherings at one another’s homes. Gradually, a larger group of Assyrians began to coalesce around this core group of pioneers, many of whom are still active in the community today. Through collective persistence and sacrifice, property was eventually acquired and grounds were developed to hold social events, religious services, and similar functions. In the early days, this took the form of a humble trailer parked in an empty lot.
As the community continued to grow, the need for more spacious and permanent accommodations became increasingly pressing. The leaders of the Assyrian community of Houston responded by launching a dynamic, resourceful fundraising campaign that ultimately resulted in the construction of a modern, beautiful, and functional facility in Katy, TX.
Today, this facility serves as the locus of Assyrian life in the Greater Houston metropolitan area. It is complete with a modern main building where we hold religious services, social events such as parties, formal dinners, casual potluck lunches, and even concerts. The grounds also feature a permanent playground complete with swings, slides, seesaws, a jungle gym, a basketball hoop, and a cornhole court. As an homage to the AAAH’s modest origins, a new pavilion was constructed directly over the former footprint of the trailer which once served as the association’s primary event venue, and it is here where we often gather to enjoy picnics and barbeques with family and friends.
We remain committed to continual growth and improvement. The latest noteworthy upgrade to our grounds is a newly paved, expanded parking area capable of meeting the needs of community members of all ages and mobility levels. As the Assyrian community of Southeast Texas continues to grow, the AAAH Board of Directors will continue to collaborate closely with our capable and engaged association members to ensure that our organization serves as a model for the preservation, promotion, and celebration of Assyrian culture.
